Bio

Àngel Duran (Barcelona, 1989) is an artist, choreographer, and movement director, graduated in contemporary dance from SEAD (Salzburg, Austria) and in Art and Design from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has also trained as an actor in both Madrid and Barcelona.

After a period working as a performer with several European companies and choreographers, he began his own project, coinciding with a process of personal and artistic redefinition. His stage research focuses on exploring the human condition through the body, understood as a space of thought, identity, and emotion. Influenced by theatre and philosophy, Duran has developed a unique language that combines demanding physicality, strong interpretative presence, and movement dramaturgy with a clear communicative intent.

Currently, he creates primarily from Barcelona and continues to expand his work across the scenic, pedagogical, and social fields. It is in movement direction where he applies his full experience to activate the body as a narrative axis within the visual composition. Duran conceives the quality of gesture, rhythm, and the essence of the body as the soul of each project, working closely with the rest of the creative team to achieve it.

Career

Trained in contemporary dance at SEAD (Salzburg, Austria) and in Art and Design at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Àngel Duran began his professional career as a performer, working with several European choreographers and companies, primarily in Belgium, Germany, and the Czech Republic. In parallel, he expanded his training in acting in both Barcelona and Madrid.

In 2020, he launched his own creative project, coinciding with a period of personal and artistic redefinition. His first piece, The Beauty of It (2020), received wide international recognition, earning awards such as First Prize at the International Solo Festival of Stuttgart, the SóLodos Dance Award, and the International Work Award at Montreal’s Quartiers Danses Festival.

In 2021, he premiered Unravel, co-produced by Dansa Metropolitana as part of the Filatures project, and Papillon, co-produced by Fira Tàrrega and nominated for the DansaCat Awards.

In 2023, he presented Cowards, co-produced by Dansa Metropolitana, a work that marked a turning point in his trajectory and was recognized with the Max Award and the Butaca Award for Best Performance. This was followed by Clinch, a site-specific version of Cowards, in 2024.

In 2025, he premiered Monument, co-produced by Mercat de les Flors and Dansa Metropolitana, which earned him the Butaca Award for Best Choreography. In 2026, he will present Manifesto, a site-specific work derived from Monument.

Àngel Duran’s work is articulated as an ongoing investigation of the body as a space of thought, identity, and exposure. His creations stem from a physical and vital impulse, with a clear intention to engage the audience and generate scenic experiences where movement, dramaturgy, and emotion interact directly.

Alongside his work as a creator, Duran develops a pedagogical practice, offering workshops and classes in both professional and community contexts. He collaborates with the NGO Gambeta, using dance and sport as tools for social inclusion for children and young people at risk of social exclusion in Colombia, Cuba, and Spain.

Additionally, he works in movement direction and stage creation for other companies and ensembles, expanding his choreographic research through dialogue with different languages and contexts.
